Excessive Alerts
Hey go easy on the alerts huh?
One alert to let people know there is something happening is enough. A second if there are major developments maybe.
I'm out of range of the VanBuren chase so the pages really mean nothing to me.
Some people get charged by the page (I have a limit on mine before charges are added, although I normally never come close to it).

You must have a problem......... and if you do, take it up with the person that runs this site.
If you cannot recieve multiple pages then have your service changed. The whole idea it to page out the event, and any thing else ie, subject crashed, or k9 let loose on the subject, or command requesting mutual aid. The idea is to inform those away from here what is going on, even if it is step by step!
gosh I wish some people would just settle down
Eric

Hmmm, I must be mistaken on what a notification was supposed to be. I thought the idea of notification is to let people know something is happening so that they can tune in if they can/want. If I am incorrect, perhaps Bob Ricci (hope I spelled that right) can chime in and let me know.
All I'm looking for from a notification service such as this one is to be notified that an event is in progress and who is involved so that I can tune in and listen myself.
The issue I had that day was that I didn't need an update on every aspect of the chase that was happening. I recieved at least 7 separate pages for that event with updates to what was happening. All I needed to know was that a chase was in progress and who was involved. If I wanted to know what was happening then I could tune in and listen myself.

I hate to point out the winner of a disagreement, but Mike wins this round. SBN is specifically for the purpose of sending an initial alert advising others where to tune. These boards are here for discussion, as well as our real-time TeamSpeak chat at teamspeak://scannerbuff.net:8767
Let's dial this down a notch and remember that we can disagree without being disagreeable. SBN will grow based on your input and participation. Heck! I'm please to read that SBN is being over-used! That's certainly better than not getting used.
Umm... Eric, settle down Thank you for participating.

Teamspeak may be downloaded from http://teamspeak.org Once installed, connect to scannerbuff.net:8767 and you will discover a world you never knew existed. It supports streaming audio feeds, text chat, voice chat, and more. It is fairly simple to use. Login first as a guest using no user name or password. Then click Self and then Register with Server. Tada! You're in.

Thanks Bob,
I thought I had remembered reading that somewhere, but I couldn't find it when I went searching for it.
And for the record, I only have a limit of 200 pages per month when using the tollfree number on it. All other pages are included in the monthly service.

Well, I guess because 1 person does not like something he gets to be right. I was under the impression that when I joined here that this was a notification network, and that meant that once the page goes out that if there is something else news worthy that we could page that out too. I guess this is not the case. I guess I will have to go to the other site and pay, that were at least as the scene progress I can update without having someone tell me they dont like all the pages. If you dont like the pages, dont sign up for em, thats the way I see it, but that is odviously not the case here......
It at least was fun while it lasted though......
Have fun
Eric

No, he doesn't get to be right. I designed the system based on the failures of other sites. Users wanted one page; two if it was necessary. These forums were created for discussion of the event. TeamSpeak was added to stream the audio. In fact, it says right on the alert page that it is only for the intial alert. It is bolded in red and has been there for a very long time. It directs users here for discussion.
If a fire, for example, goes from a 1st alarm straight to 3, that might be a reason to issue another alert. But a play by play is not what SBN is about. I can tell you this: the other services don't want it either. They get more complaints on this very issue than not.
I thought this had become a non-issue. I've only received one complaint and I just responded to it. If SBN doesn't meet your needs, then so be it. But SBN has evolved based on the wants and needs of the masses. They have praised us many times over for our approach. What do you say that we leave this alone and get on to what we enjoy - scanning.

I didn't mean to start an argument about it. I have an idea that may help give the best of both worlds, take it or leave it...
My thought is to add paging options on the various levels for updates. I could then sign up for Pursuits in the Detroit area, then at my option, sign up for Pursuits - Updates if I want more updates on the event (I wouldn't, but Eric might)
Then those that want just the single page like me can get those, and those that want more info can get the updates... I'm not sure how much of a load an alert puts on the system and bandwidth, but it's a thought.
